My mother-in-law had 65k money stolen from her by her granddaughter. How can she get it back?
My mother-in-law allowed her granddaughter (who is a loan officer) to become a signer on her bank account 15 days before she came into around 65k because of a reverse mortgage. That very day, her granddaughter, who worked at the bank where the grandmothers account was at, withdrew the funds and transferred them into her account. She then used the money to put a down payment onto her own home. She was found out and started making little payments of 300.00 or so dollars a month to my mother-in-law. Then, she left the state and has not been seen since. She did sell the home and has pocketed the money due to my mother-in-law. Do we have any hope of ever seeing my mother-in-law’s money again? This is the last of what her late husband of 50 years left her for her golden years and she is only 70 and her mom lived to be 92 so she has alot of living to do yet. Please help us help her. Thanks.
Lawyer time. Get an attorney.
Granddaughter is a criminal and must go to prison.
But — the bank may be liable. You may be able to sue the bank, which helped the granddaughter to steal the money.

LikeDislikewhen you found out in the first time was probably your best shot at getting the monies
next problem when you do find her she owes the monies but will she have anything left to collect, hopefully
being a co-signer on the note may excuse the bank in liability

LikeDislikeSince she was made a cosigner on the account by your Mother-In-Law the Bank has no liability as far as I know. She had legal access to the money because she was on the account. So you can’t go after the bank.
So you would have to find and go after her directly. And even then getting the money back might be difficult and costly because of court costs. I’m assuming you’ve talked to a lawyer about this, if not that would be the first step in finding out what is legally possible in this case.
