How do I find out what I’m best suited for as far as a career?
I’m a Loan Officer that got into the business at the tail end of the “refi boom”? Since then I have worked as a broker and a banker. I’m looking to get out, but can’t seem to find other work. I’m fluent in English and Spanish. I have relatively impressive background, but can’t seem to find employment outside of the mortgage/ banking industry which I no longer want to be working in. I also happen to live in a part of the country that has been struggling for what seems like 12 years now. Most people in my demografic are leaving the state and never coming back. At one point I thought I would be able use this as my advantage, but the truth of the situation has proven the opposite. The level of fluency alone I would think I could get a job. I know people who “majored” in Spanish- don’t speak, write, or read, well and somehow have managed to find gainful employment. I never completed my degree, but that little piece of paper can’t compare to my experiences and ability. What to do?
Try to do an online career skills test. I cant remember the site for sure but I think Career Builder has one..It will point out strengths, weaknesses, etc. Also, make a list of the things you like to do and that you are good at and use that as a stepping stone. Unfortunately, you may have to wind up going back to school for something in order to get a good job. Sometimes having a degree period is better than not having one at all. Even if a degree isn’t in the field you are applying in, it sometimes gives you an advantage over others who have no degree at all.
