Save. I’m in Ireland and we’ve looked at house prices in the States and they are cheap by Irish standards. A typical new build 3 bed semi-detached house here used to cost about $ 300,000/$ 350,00 until 2 years ago – prices have slumped now but you’d still pay about $ 200,000/$ 250,000.
A “middle class” couple in the US who both work could potentially save $ 100,000/$ 150,000 over say 4 or 5 years and then buy outright.

My husband and I lived in apartments when he was an international student. We would rather live in an apartment then take out a loan that majority of time involves riba and go to hell for committing a sin. Remember you cannot deal with usury/riba in banks or in loans (that is why I do not take scholarships or loans for college tuition). There is nothing wrong with living in an apartment, the only thing I hate is the apartments in America are not soundproof.
